Winifred Smith


Winifred “Winnie” Smith, 90, of South Plymouth passed away early Friday morning, October 26, 2018, at her home.

Winnie was born on October 8, 1928 in Preston the daughter of Matthew and Theabelle (King) Franklin.

She grew up in the Preston and Oxford areas where she attended the local schools.

On April 10, 1954 in Oxford she married John R. Smith who passed away October 16, 2006. Together they ran their dairy farm in North Pharsalia for over 50 years where they raised their family.

Winnie was a true homemaker. She enjoyed working side by side with her husband on the farm and making her home a place her family loved to be. She was a member of the Pharsalia Auxiliary, Home Bureau and The North Pharsalia Bible Church.

A kind and thoughtful person she usually had a smile on her face and was always willing to help anyone in need. With unshakable perseverance, independence was evident in her everyday life. She enjoyed driving her Lincoln to town, be it to the grocery store, to visit friends or to the beauty salon which she truly enjoyed.

Winnie is survived by her sons Matthew (Duke) Smith and wife Brenda, Derek Smith and wife Kim all of So. Plymouth, grandchildren Shannon (Charlene) Smith, Ashley (Larry) VanDunk, Joshua (Mallory) Smith, great grandchildren Katelin, Sarah, Cadin, Bryson and Emily. Also surviving are her siblings Gloria (Doug) Davis of Oxford, Allan (Julia) Franklin of Preston and Arden (Mary) Franklin of Norwich. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Besides her husband John, Winnie was predeceased by her sister Eleanor Loomis and brothers Delmar, Dwight, Lawrence and Merton Franklin.

In keeping with Winnie’s wishes there will be a private graveside service at the Wayside Rest Cemetery of No. Pharsalia.
