Sidney Miedema


Sidney Miedema, 79, of Castle Hill Rd., passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at his home.

He was born April 6, 1939 in Wons, Netherlands, the eldest of ten children of the late Oega and Wietske Tiglhelaar Miedema, receiving his education in local schools.

The family moved to the United States in 1956, settling in Sussex, County, NJ. Sidney was a farmer in Sussex until moving to Wallkill in 1960.

On June 6, 1964, Sidney married Betty Jane Hosking in Sussex, NJ. He worked for a feed company in Pennsylvania until moving back to Sussex when Betty’s dad became ill, and for 18 years, he worked for the Fetzer Fast Freight Company.

In 1983, he started dairy farming with his son, John, in New Jersey. They moved to Sherburne in 1987 and started Dutch Lane Farms where he retired in 2004.

Sidney was a talented musician who played almost any instrument, his favorite being the trombone, and he enjoyed playing in a band with his family. Most importantly, Sidney was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle whose family was his greatest joy.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Norwich.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Betty; a son and daughter-in-law, Sidney John and Martha Jane Miedema of Sherburne; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jonathan David and Lisa Dawn Miedema and their children, David Rylan, Danielle Paige and Nathan Caleb, of Sherburne; Kristina Lynn and Austin Randall Martin and their children, Hollin Jace, Fletcher Austin and Aubrey Rose, of Winfield, PA; Sarah Nicole and Scott Norman Smith, and daughter, Kinsley Ann of Sherburne; and Lisa Maria Miedma of Sherburne; his siblings, Ray and Geke Miedma of Drachten, Netherlands; Clara and Casey Brands of Ferrisburgh, VT; Tom Miedema of Vergennes, VT; Gert and Jack Herreynew of Burlington, Ontario; Frukje Moorby of Bomoseen, VT; Jenni Peters of Englewood, CO; Foka and Stewart Bruinsma of Cordell, GA; Edith Heerspink of Grandville, MI; Oega and Kim Miedema of Vergennes, VT; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 12 Noon, Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Calvary Dr., Norwich, NY.
Private graveside services will be held in the Graham Cemetery, Hubbardsville, NY.
