Gene L. Nelson


Gene L. Nelson, 75, life-long Smyrna resident, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at his home.

He was born November 21, 1942 in Smyrna a son of Gerald and Lois E. Eastman Nelson and received his education in Smyrna and Sherburne schools.

On December 31, 1972, Gene married Gail K. Marvin. Gene was a dairy farmer on the family farm his entire life.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time “on the hill” at the camp he created, woodworking and he loved to “tinker”. He also collected antique tractors.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Gail; his children, Stacy Nelson of Cooperstown; Dale and Jennifer Nelson, Kyle and Kathy Nelson, all of Smyrna; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Louis Wilbur, Geraldine and Richard Cosens and Nola Sutherland, all of Sherburne; Karen Powers and Jerry Fuller of Arizona; and Grace MaCumber of Guilford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Phil and Norena Nelson, Michael and Mira Nelson, all of Smyrna; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene was predeceased by a son, Dennis Nelson in 2017; two brothers, Allen and David Nelson; and a sister, Rachel Bates.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by burial in Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 7-9pm.
