Martha Ruth (marti) Conklin


Martha Ruth (Marti) Conklin, 86 of a lifelong resident of Norwich and known by many as “Gram” , passed away Friday morning, July 6, 2018, at the Norwich Rehabilitation Center.
Marti was born on August 30, 1931 in Norwich the daughter of Harry and Josephine (Webb) Conklin. She was educated in the Norwich schools and graduated with the class of 1949. Deciding to further her education, Marti attended Cortland State Teachers College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1953. Her career began in 1955 with the Sherburne School District and at the same time she was continuing her education to earn her Master’s Degree. Marti’s career as a Physical Education Teacher which would span over 30 years years until her retirement in 1987.
Marti’s athletic, teaching and coaching abilities made her a perfect fit for her position as Physical Education Teacher for the district. Over the years she earned the respect and friendship not only of her students but parent’s and fellow teachers as well. Her fairness and willingness to work with others was a testament to her and for her years at S-E. Aside from her position at the school Marti was an excellent runner and bicyclist. She had run in the New York City Marathon as well as others around the states and had cycled in Europe.
Marti was also a resident of Chenango Lake for over 50 years and could be seen jogging around the lake. She was former President of the Lake Association and made it her business to know everything that took place at the lake which would enable her to fulfill her duties as President. She had a mind of her own and enjoyed reading a good book.
Marti is survived by her sister, Nancy L. Conklin of Chenango Lake, brother Sewain (Sheila) Conklin of Norwich, niece Shealyn (Conklin) Card and nephews Shane (Amy) Conklin and Matthew White. She is also survived by four grandnieces, Julia and Kayden Card and Abigail and Emily Flynn and two grandnephews, Arron and Ian Card.
Marti was predeceased by her parents Harry and Josephine and sister, Josephine S. White.
In keeping with Marti’s wishes a private burial will be held in Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
