Dorothy Lura Fritschler


Dorothy Lura (Freligh) Fritschler, passed away unexpectedly in her home in Norwich, NY on Friday June 8, 2018, at the young age of 95.

Dorothy was born June 2, 1923 at her ancestral farm on River Road along the Mohawk River between Latham and Niskayuna, NY, the daughter of Fred Abram Freligh and Stella Elizabeth (Briggs) Freligh.

Fred was an entrepreneurial farmer and Stella was a schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse.

Dorothy had two siblings, her older brother Fred Jr., and identical twin sister Doris who she remained best friends with throughout her 95 years.

Dorothy graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1940, and then Mildred Elley Secretarial School in 1942.

She was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, NY as a secretary during World War II. Dorothy married the love of her life, Charles Henry Fritschler on May 20,1950.

Dorothy and Charles had a happy loving marriage raising three boys in Niskayuna, NY before relocating the family to Norwich, NY in 1966.

Dorothy was a devoted housewife who supported her family; and worked part-time at various positions including at Victory Markets, Chenango County Soil and Water Conservation, and Chenango County Chamber of Commerce.

She volunteered with the American Cancer Society and was active with their annual Daffodil campaign.

Dorothy had a lifelong love of weaving, doing counted cross-stitch, knitting, and other crafts.

She took joy in making handmade items for family and friends.

Dorothy loved gardening around her house; and when she could no longer tend her gardens, Dorothy switched to potted plants so she had plants around her all the time.

She often remarked that flowers ‘make me happy’.

Dorothy was an avid reader, especially of Romances on her kindle.
An animal lover since her childhood on the farm and hiking with her pet goat, Charles and Dorothy had innumerable dogs and cats over their lifetime.

Dorothy loved summers at their family camp on Bradley Brook Reservoir, and liked sitting at the kitchen table watching the numerous wildlife, especially birds, in her backyard.

Surviving Dorothy are her identical twin sister Doris (Freligh) Nelson (Richard), of Los Gatos, CA; sons Charles Alan Fritschler (Beatriz) of NYC; Karl Dennis Fritschler (Nancy), of Oxford, NY and their daughter, Sarah; Kevin John Fritschler, of McDonough, NY and his son Brian (Stephanie), and grandson Talon, daughter Hillary, and grandson Jaydon. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Dorothy is also survived by her beloved dog Andi, who she found inseparable.
Dorothy is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Charles, and her brother Fred Freligh, Jr. (Janet).

There will be a private memorial service for Dorothy’s immediate family.
