Carrie Jane Watkins


Carrie Jane Watkins, 89, formerly of West Winfield, NY, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2018, at Woodside Hall, in Cooperstown, NY.

She is survived by her son, John T. Watkins II, his wife, Christine, and their three children, Kelby, Kaleigh, and Cody, of Earlville, NY; and daughter Myra Grace Searles, her husband, Tim, and their children, Emily, and Oliver, of Cherry Valley, NY.

She is sadly predeceased by her husband of 54 years, John T. Watkins; and her son, Emmett J. Watkins, and her brother, Raymond J. Saltsman..

Carrie Jane as born October 22, 1928, to Raymond Emmett Saltsman and Myra Saltsman nee Martini.

She attended Johnstown Schools, and SUNY Cobleskill, where she met her husband. During that time she also worked at the family restaurant, Saltsman’s Hotel, in Ephratah, NY.

She was a devoted Mom, who supported and encouraged her husband, and their children.

She loved gardening, especially her rose gardens, as well as, birding, her favorites being bluebirds and cardinals. She was also an avid reader of all types of books.

She was an enthusiast of wild edibles,such as watercress, milkweed greens, elderberries, rhubarb, wild asparagus, beet greens, and the like.
Carrie Jane was an active member of the Federated Church in West Winfield, serving on the church board, and was also active in The Order of the Eastern Star.

She was very interested in genealogy, and was a member of the Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman organization.

In later years, she led the Richfield Springs area Senior Exercise Group, and was a member of the Bridgewater Art Club.

Her ashes will be interred in the family cemetery plot at Unadilla Forks Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday June 2, 2018 at the Federated Church of West Winfield 452 East Main St. West Winfield with Reverend Ken McKenzie officiating.

In lieu, of flowers, donations will be welcomed by the West Winfield Fire Department, 373 West Main Street West Winfield, NY in memory of Carrie Jane Watkins.
