Edith Jones


NORWICH – Edith L. Jones, 88, of Cortland Street, passed away on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 28, 1921 in Penfield, Edith was the daughter of Richard G. and Edith Margaret Kelsall Smith. After graduating from Penfield High School, she worked at Woolworth’s in Rochester prior to World War II and subsequently at Kodak where she met her husband, Glenn, who she married at Davidson Army Airfield. Following Glenn’s discharge from active duty, Edith worked several jobs. Glenn died in August of 1964.  Edith then became a legal secretary and eventually joined the Xerox Corporation as an executive secretary to the vice president.  Edith retired in 1985 and moved to Norwich in 1987. During 1978, in East Rochester, she married Clarence ‘Cal’ Jones who died in November of 2001. 
Edith enjoyed reading, boating and cooking.  She was a member of St. Paul’s Church, the Eastern Star and a former president of the Ladies of Charity.
Edith is survived by her son, James Cushman and his wife, Nancy, of Norwich; her daughter, Hazel Schreiber and her husband, Ronald of Honeoye; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister, Betty Phelps of East Rochester. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by a brother, James Smith and a sister, Dorothy Santillo.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Edith will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul’s Church. Friends are invited to call in the Marion Chapel of St. Paul’s Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery in Penfield.
