John D. Davis


John D. Davis, 89, of Cincinnatus, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at his home.
Born in Greene, NY, on August 17, 1928, John was a son of the late Claude Davis and Marie Harrington Davis Saulsbury. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Cincinnatus where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. A self-employed carpenter for several years, he helped design and build three additions at the church, including the addition which now houses the baptismal. He was also a part of the gymnasium construction at the church. For 16 years, John helped George Staley reconstruct his antique cars, working to rebuild the wooden frames of the vehicles. He also volunteered as a tour guide for George Staley at the Northeast Car Museum in Norwich and designed and built George’s calliope which has been seen in many parades. As a carpenter, he also made his own violin and over 50 gun stocks for family and friends. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting in the Adirondacks.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Harvey Davis; and children, Marilyn Davis of Norwich, Linda (Steve) Carroll of Port Smith, VA, Joanne (Danny) Walker of Anderson, SC, Rosemary (David) McKinnon of Goshen, VT, and Kenneth Davis of Cincinnatus. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Chad Davis, Stephanie (Kendell) Cash, Shelly and Susie Carroll, Brandon and Emily Rink, and Clark and Johnny McKinnon; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Williams, Mary Sturdevant, and Joyce Blakeman; ad sons-in-law, Gary Davis and Daniel Rink and stepfather, Jack Saulsbury.
Funeral services will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, NY, on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. with his pastor, Reverend Paul Carlson, and nephew, Paul Jewell, officiating. Burial will be in Lower Cincinnatus Cemetery at a later date.
