Clark Carnal


NORWICH – Clark C. Carnal, 95, of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Norwich, died on Nov. 9, 2009, at the age of 95 years.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Grace Hoag Carnal; sister, Charlotte Lamos (Tarbel), North Syracuse; and two of his four children, Gary A. Carnal (Elizabeth G. Mansfield), St. Petersburg, Fla. and Patricia Galbraith (Dirk) of Ithaca. Mary Lou Carnal and William Carnal III preceded him in death. He has eight grandchildren, Diane Galbraith, Mary May Carnal, William Carnal IV, Sybil Masteller, Travis Carnal, Sarah Carnal, Ben Carnal, and Faye Taylor, along with four great grandchildren.
The son of Clarence Wood Carnal and Lucille Clements Carnal, he was born on Jan. 20, 1914 and started his career as a teacher in rural northern New York, and earned his B.S. in 1945 at the State University at Buffalo. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree and PhD at Cornell University in educational administration. He retired from school administration in 1969 after serving as Superintendent of Schools in upstate New York for 21 years in Oswego, East Syracuse, Lansing and Monticello. He was instrumental int he planning and building of new schools in each location. After retirement, he taught as a professor at Atlanta University in the Doctoral program for education administration.
He lived his Christian faith through volunteer work, charitable support, and helping others, including service in the chaplain’s office at the Veteran’s Hospital at Bay Pines and starting and managing for eight years the first bible study and prayer group at the New York State Correctional Facility in Camp Pharsalia. He was a deeply spiritual and devout Christian and a loving, caring, giving person tomany individuals and charitable organizations. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Norwich and an associate member of Pasadena Community Church.
He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone whose lives weretouched by him.
