Charlie Townsend


Charles A. (Charlie) Townsend, 80, of Norwich and Mt. Upton passed away Thursday afternoon, December 14, 2017, at the Norwich Rehabilitation Center.
Charlie was born in Norwich on November 5, 1937 the son of Charles and Evelyn (Lee) Townsend. He grew up in Norwich, was a star athlete throughout his high school years and was a 1956 “Tough As Bricks” graduate of the Norwich High School. In 1999 he married Barbara Lewis who survives.
Charlie’s athletic abilities were second to none. Rather it was football, baseball, golf, basketball, bowling or shooting a game of pool you could always rely on Charlie to come through in the clutch. He was recently inducted into the Norwich High School Sports Hall of Fame along with several other well know Norwich athletes. Following his graduation he was headed to Ithaca College and just two weeks prior to signing on he signed a bonus contract with the Milwaukee Braves and thus began his post high school sports career.
Charlie’s professional career was also just as impressive. He began in the banking industry in 1979 as a Systems Consumer Credit Officer. Over the years he held many positions in several banks with the last being Assistant Vice President – Retail Credit Examination Credit Examination Division with the Bank South N.A. in Atlanta, GA from which he retired.
Charlie is survived by his wife Barb of Mt. Upton and her sons Chris, Mark and Eric O’Connor, grandson Tommy O’Connor, nieces Jody (Ron) Storrin, Barb (Mark) Lacy and nephew Jim (Diana) Hickling. Numerous extended loved family members, friends in the Norwich area and Atlanta area also survive.
Charlie was predeceased by his sister Frances Hickling, brother Joseph Natoli and nephews Larry and David Gale.
At Charlie’s request there will be no formal funeral service.
Arrangements are by the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home.
