George Krauss, 86, of Guilford passed away on Tuesday November 7, 2017 at his home. George was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 17, 1931 to the late Arthur and Lillian Krauss. Upon completion of high school, George enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served his country bravely during the Chosin Reservoir Battle in Korea, walking with his platoon over 70 miles in temperatures that were often well below zero. He received two purple hearts during his service. After his military service, George went on to earn Bachelor’s Degrees in entomology, and electronic engineering. He worked at MacArthur Airport on Long Island repairing the radar equipment. He also spent many years working for the Museum of Natural History travelling worldwide collecting insect specimens. In more recent years, George lived in Guilford where he persued many interests including painting, sculpting, ham radio operation, falconry, beekeeping, raising german shepherds, handgun shooting, motorcycling, growing orchids and Bonzai trees in the greenhouse he built and rehabilitating injured wildlife. George was a member of the John W. Thurston Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Binghamton, The Korean War Veteran’s Association, First Marine Division Association, The Marine Corps Association, Military Auxiliary Radio System, American Legion Post 189 in Norwich, Chapter 113 Military Order of Devil Dogs in Cortland, and Central NY Leatherneck Motorcycle Club, the Rockdale Gun Club and Delhi Pistol Club. He will be remembered as a dedicated Marine who respected his country and always stood for the flag. The Stars and Stripes, they flew forever always in his heart. He was loyal to his nation and bravely did his part. Always thinking of his brother ever in his mind. He stood for love of country and most of all, mankind. He’s gazing down with his Master through a light and heavenly cloud, he’s looking out for all of us of whom he is so proud. Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Shirley Krauss; his children, Mark Krauss, David Krauss, Ellen Cruse, Stephanie and John Stobbe, and Anthony and Rachael Ryan; his grandchildren, Colton, Maddison, and James; his great-granddaughter, Kylie; his dear friends, Joe and Cindy Ocasio, Eddie Cotton, and the many Marine Corp League brothers. Calling hours for George will be held at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich on Sunday November 12 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. Burial with full military honors will take place at Guilford Center Cemetery immediately following.
