Carol Elaine Smith Whispell

We celebrate the life and mourn the loss of Carol Elaine Smith Whispell. Carol was born in Norwich, NY on February 3, 1942 to the late Dorothy May Rathbun Smith and Robert Albert Smith. She passed away in Arizona surrounded by the love of her family, on October 3, 2017.
She was the cherished wife and “Sweetheart” to Charles R. Whispell for 55+ years. Together they treasured the memories of family gatherings and the trips they were able to take to Florida, South Carolina, New York City, the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and Arizona where they ultimately retired.  Carol’s devotion to her “Charl” was most apparent in recent years, as even with her own challenges she lovingly cared for him.
Carol attended school in Norwich where she enjoyed playing the saxophone in the school band and violin in the school orchestra. She proudly graduated in the top ten of her high school class. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at GLA and later at NBT in data processing for many years. She inspired others with her delicious homemade meals, canning, pies and cookies. Her ability to organize and host holiday gatherings has cultivated family traditions that will continue for generations to come. One of her favorite joys was her flowers, whether out in the garden or in a mason jar on the table.
Carol’s love will forever grow through her three daughters Deborah Roberts (husband James) of Glendale, AZ, Christy Abrams of Glendale, AZ and Jennifer Ford of Norwich, NY. She will be deeply missed by her best friend and sister Sandra Goodney (husband John), brother Robert Smith, Aunt Sally Hensley, brother in law Frederick Whispell (wife Marion), sister in law Hazel Thomas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Being a grandmother to Brittany Crewdson, Allyson Roberts, Taylor Ford, Logan Ford, Norah Caroline Abrams and Great Grandmother to Hunter Crewdson and Brody Crewdson meant the world to her.
Mom was “HOME” to her family and as she taught us, we will always be together in each other’s hearts.
Please join the family in honoring Carol’s life on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich. Calling hours will be from noon until the memorial service at 1:00.  A luncheon and gathering will be held at the church following the services. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Norwich YMCA or the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.
