Barbara Leigh Whaley


Barbara Leigh Whaley, 62, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday September 21, 2017, with her family by her side. She was born in Norwich, New York, on September 15, 1955 to Douglas and Mildred Underwood.
Barb was a charismatic loving individual whom unselfishly cared for all. She took under her wing, any object that needed care.
She touched many people’s lives in ways that won’t ever be forgotten. Barb was a lifelong resident of Chenango County. Her life’s passions were, exhibiting un-yielded compassion to all living creatures, and taking pride in her horses. She enjoyed being outside, playing scratch off tickets, drinking coffee, and playing numerous games of Solitaire, but most of all spending time with family and friends.
Barb graduated from Norwich High School in 1973, and later attended Morrisville State College, mastering equine science. For the last 22 years, Barb has worked for Delaware Opportunities, as a Respite aide worker. The love and solicitude, she conveyed through her work, not only strengthened the lives of her families but encouraged many others to want to be like her. Barb was known to many as, “Mom”, “Aunt Barb”, and “Barbara Dear”.
Barb married Rory Whaley in 1985. Together they raised a beautiful family.
Barb is survived by her mother, Mildred Underwood, and her children; Gary (Melinda) Whaley of Lebanon, Shaun (Stacey) Whaley of Norwich, Tad Whaley of Norwich, Jenna (Justin) Parker of Otselic, and Jamie (Denise) Goedell of Lebanon. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Quartney, Cheyanne, Miranda, Makayla, Delphine, Tori, Carter, Marley and Hunter. Siblings; Jack, Laurie, Mari, Steve, Donna, Jeanie, and Darlene. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, husband, and brother Dougie.
A remembrance of Barbs astounding life, will be held, Saturday October 7th, from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the North Norwich Town Hall Pavillion.
Arrangements have been entrusted to R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich.
