Elwin J. "buster" Monroe


Elwin J. “Buster” Monroe, 99, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. He was born in Plymouth, NY on October 20, 1917 to the late Porter B. and Viola Hall Monroe. In his early years, Buster worked on farms and delivered hay and cattle around various locations in Chenango County. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and spent four years serving his country as an artilleryman. After his military service, he returned to Norwich and went to work as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Norwich Highway Department. During the years there, Buster held many positions eventually becoming Highway Superintendent until his retirement in 1976. In his spare time, Buster enjoyed flea markets where he and his wife, Idamae could be seen selling various items. He was a man of many talents, always able to repair things around his home or assist a family member. He was known to spend time at Eicke’s Restaurant where he would have breakfast and spend time with his friends. He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 2782 in Norwich, American Legion Post 230 in Sherrill and Norwich American Legion. In later years, Buster enjoyed feeding and watching the wildlife in his back yard. Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth King; his grandsons, Kenny King and Kyle King; his granddaughters Stacey LePage and Heather Jacobs; and Kelly and Alfred E. DaCosta-Faro III; his great-grandchildren, Cearah J. DaCosta-Faro; Anthony E. DaCosta-Faro; Kylie King; Kianna King; and Kamrin King; his close friends, Ralph and Barbara Bush; Marlene Utter; Kathleen Ceploski; and Linda Marie Jones. He was predeceased by his wife Idamae in 2004. Buster will be laid to rest with military honors at Deer Pond Cemetery in a private ceremony. Arrangements have been entrusted to R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
