DOROTHY BOWEN ACKLEY
Dorothy Bowen Ackley, 102, of Norwich, passed away Saturday morning, June 24, 2017, at the RCHF of Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy was born on January 18, 1915 in North Orwell, Pennsylvania the daughter of Edwin and Lida Bowen. She attended the Orwell High School where she was an outstanding basketball player. On July 17, 1932 she married Hartley Ackley, former Ward 1 Alderman. Their marriage lasted 62 years until his death in 1994. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, her brother Clifford, her daughter Cynthia, her son Edward and her son Clifford. She is survived by her daughter Joan Swertfager of Oxford, her daughter-in-law Marylee Ackley of Norwich and daughter-in-law Colleen Ackley of Mesa, Arizona. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Julie Taylor, Lynn (Joey) Adams, Lydia (Greg) Evanson, Tara (Rich) Yanni, Rebecca Doing, Courtney (Brian) Rathell, Caitlin Ackley and Scarlett Joy along with fourteen great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Dorothy was active all of her life. She bowled with her husband, shot archery at the YMCA and especially enjoyed working in her flower gardens. Her rose garden that she shared with her neighbor, Cecile, was a sight to behold. Dorothy was employed by the Norwich Shoe Co. for 15 years but was primarily a wife, mother and homemaker. Dorothy had traveled extensively within the US especially in the southwest. She also had visited Mexico, Canada, Spain, Portugal and Northern Africa, Dorothy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Captain John Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Compact. While at the Chenango Memorial RCHF she enjoyed all the wonderful activities offered especially the Bingo, Bowling and Hot Wheels Racing. The family wishes to thank all the staff at the CMHRHCF for their care of our mother and grandmother.
Private funeral services for Dorothy will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are with the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home.
