Joan W. Newman

JOAN W. NEWMAN
SHERBURNE: Joan W. Newman, 79, lifelong Sherburne resident, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton with family by her side. She was born October 21, 1937 in Sherburne, a daughter of Raymond J. and Anna Owens Wynn. Joan was a graduate of Sherburne High School in 1955. On November 30, 1957, Joan married Richard (Dick) Newman in Sherburne. He predeceased her on January 6, 2007.
For several years, Joan worked for Victory Markets headquarters in Norwich, and then left to devote herself to raising her family. She later worked for the Village of Sherburne for 28 years as a clerk for the Electric Department before retiring in 2006.
Joan was proud to have been the Sherburne Marching Band’s drum majorette in high school. She and Dick loved laughter and companionship of friends and family. They enjoyed camping and traveling together throughout New York. She and Dick had a great group of friends over the years that met regularly; she loved sharing stories of those fun times they had and all their antics. While at work, Joan would always offer a pleasant hello and enjoyed her coworkers’ company. For many years Joan volunteered her time for local and state elections at the Sherburne polling site. Visiting children could always expect a treat before leaving after a visit to her house. Joan was a loving, caring, giving individual, full of vitality. Most of all, Joan loved her family and her faith.
Surviving are her children, Ginny and Chris Chesebro of Norwich; Douglas and Aimee Newman of Sherburne; a sister, Catherine Homer (John Drabel) of Mexico, NY; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Chesebro (Josh Miller) of Norwich; Andrew (Maggie) Chesebro of Arlington, MA; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Connor Miller and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Suzanne Newman, in 2008 and a brother, Thomas Wynn, in 1991.
Joan was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Saturday, July 1, 2017 from St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, followed by interment in St. Malachy’s Cemetery and a luncheon thereafter.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 5:00 - ¬8:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 4:45pm.
Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Malachy’s Church or the St. Malachy’s Altar Rosary Society.
