HOWARD GOHL
Howard H. Gohl, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. He was 77 years old.
Born July 27, 1939, in Whitney Point, NY, Howard was the son of Warren and Alberta (Hodge) Gohl. After graduating high school, Howard enlisted and served in the United States Army from 1957-1960. For two of those years, Howard was stationed in Germany and was able to see much of Europe during that time.
After being honorably discharged, Howard began his higher education studies in the fields of science and education, having eventually earned a master’s degree in education. He put his education to use as an earth science teacher in the Oxford Academy & Central Schools where he taught from 1967-1991 until his retirement.
On August 10, 1968, in Little Falls, NY, Howard married his wife of nearly 49 years, Mary Jane Wnuk, who survives.
Howard was a voracious reader and was constantly educating himself even outside the classroom and in retirement. He poured through his National Geographic, Smithsonian, and Archaeology magazines, and leaves behind a collection of many hundreds of National Geographic. He also ordered and reviewed dozens of the Great Courses series. Howard was also fond of gardening at his home and elsewhere. He would voluntarily help plant flowers at the NYS Veterans’ Home, in Oxford, and the GE Aviation campus, in Norwich, and served many other private residents with their flower planting. Howard also loved to write, and took several writing courses at the SUNY Morrisville. He also would write letters to those he knew, usually three or four daily. Howard also loved to cook, and enjoyed painting. One of his paintings was featured at the NY State Fair, in Syracuse.
In addition to his beloved wife, Howard is survived by siblings Barbara Rocks and her husband, William, of North Norwich, Dennis Gohl, of Apalachin, and Sharon Muserallo, and her husband Anthony “Butch,” as well as many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was predeceased by his brothers George and Theodore.
A memorial service for Howard will be held in the summer at Christ Lutheran Church, in Norwich. A notice will be published prior to the service.
