John L. Aikins


John L. Aikins, 64, a lifelong resident of Norwich and former Chenango County Deputy Sheriff, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 11, 2017, at home with his family at his side.
John was born in Norwich on March 18, 1952 the son of Kenneth and Coral (Letson) Aikins. He grew up in Norwich and was a 1971 graduate of the Norwich High School. Over the years John had been employed by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Dept. for a period of 19 years, had also worked at BOCES where he taught Auto Mechanics as well as their defensive driving class. He also drove bus for the Norwich School District.
John was, without question, a huge motorcyclist. It was always 24/7 in his mind. Throughout the years he and his wife, family and friends had taken many trips all over the country. He also enjoyed wood cutting and auto mechanics.
John is survived by his wife Nancy (Redmond) Aikins of Norwich, his children Shawn (Alison) Aikins of Morris, Robin (Kevin) Christian of So. New Berlin, Tandi (Shane) Wegner of Fuquay Varina, NC, Danielle (Corey) Babcock of Navarre, FL, Jonathan (Jessica) Aikins of Norwich, Katherine (Benjamin) Murphy of Killeen, TX and JoEllen (Daniel) Holmberg of Jacksonville,NC and 11 grandchildren with the 12th due very soon. Also surviving are his siblings Elizabeth (Alan) Snyder of Wills Point, TX, Theresa (Richard) Hutton of Paterson, CA, Kenneth (Margaret) Aikins of Goldsboro, NC, Stephen (Viann) Aikins of Norwich and Dean Aikins of Fuquqy Varina, NC along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Coral and his sister Diane Aikins.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday, March 18, from 11-2pm. There will be no formal funeral service and interment will be private.
