RHODA W. SHERWOOD
SHERBURNE, NY – Rhoda W. Sherwood, 74, of Bingham-Collins Rd., passed away Monday, February 27, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.
She was born December 15, 1942 in East Venice, NY, a daughter of George and E. Jane Conaty Whitten. She was a graduate of Genoa High School and then the Central City Business Institute in Syracuse in 1960. Rhoda had worked for General Electric in Syracuse on the Radio Guidance project where she was part of the team that worked on the Apollo program for NASA. On August 22, 1964, Rhoda married John M. Sherwood in the Genoa Federated Church. She became a homemaker, a loving wife, and mother who dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family. She enjoyed several hobbies including knitting, ceramics, collecting antique Depression glass, flower gardening, bird watching and dancing. She loved the sea shore and collecting shells.
Rhoda was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sherburne where she sang in the choir and worked on refurbishing the Christmas creche. She also sang with the Sherburne Community Chorus and was an avid supporter of the Sherburne Library and the Food Pantry.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, John; her children, Steven M. Sherwood of Potsdam; Michael J. Sherwood, Mark N. and Amy Sherwood, all of Sherburne; brothers and sisters-in-law, George Whitten of Sherburne; Charles Whitten of Auburn; Cary and Rita Whitten of Holliston, MA; Terry and Kathy Whitten of Elbridge; Roland and Laurie Whitten of Seneca Falls; and sister-in-law, Constance Ford of Lackawaxen, PA; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by brother, Robert Whitten and infant brother Dale Whitten; and a sister, Maurita Biek.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm Friday, March 3, 2017 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
Interment will be in the East Venice Cemetery at a later date.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 1-3 pm prior to the service.
