Charles Frederick Owens, Sr., 74, of Temple, TX and formerly of Norwich, died on Friday, January 13, 2017, in Temple, TX.
Born on August 10, 1942, in Norwich, Charles was the son of the late Frederick Owens and Helen (George) Holiday in Norwich. At the age of nine, Charles and his mother relocated to Brooklyn where he continued his education. Following his graduation, he enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country from 1968 – 1988. Charles had two tours in Vietnam and three tours in Germany. He traveled the world in the service and enjoyed meeting countless people.
In 1991, Charles married his soul mate, Kathryn L. (Brethen) Owens, who survives. Together, the two made their home in Temple.
Charles was a great cook, and could make any meal that all would enjoy. He enjoyed woodworking and often was found making furniture. Most of all, he enjoyed family and spending quality time at family events. In 2015, Charles and Kathryn traveled to Norwich to attend their annual family reunion, something he would not miss for the world. Charles enjoyed watching the Redskins and was a member of his local VFW and American Legion Post #133. Being a Leo, he also collected lion figures and also collected regional crystal.
In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his five sons; Dexter Owens, William (Boni Shearee) Owens, Charles (Angela) Owens, Jr., Harry, and Raymond Owens; and his six daughters; Sharron (Leonel) Idrogo, Robin Owens-Parker, Hattie Pugh, Khris Kearney, Tracy Owens, and Wanda Owens-Thomas. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cousins.
Funeral services for Charles in Norwich will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2017, at the Wilson Funeral Home, Norwich, NY, where the Rev. Thomas Olson will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Norwich where full military honors will be presented.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Regency Manor, Scott and White Hospice, Scott & White Dialysis, and the VA Rehabilitation Center for all the care and compassion they gave Charles during his time of need during the last few years.
