Delores Young

SIDNEY – Delores “Nicki” Young, 74, of Sidney, passed away late Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2009, in the A.O. Fox Hospital of Oneonta.
The daughter of Howard L. and Daisy Adams Jackson, Nicki was born in Wanakena in November of 1934. She grew up in the Beaver Meadow/Norwich area and was a graduate of the Norwich High School. Nicki lived in North Norwich until 1975, when she moved to Sidney and was residing there at the time of her passing. She was an outgoing and personable lady with interests in history, who had served her community as North Norwich Town Historian for 10 years, assisted in the opening of Chenango County Historical Society’s museum, served on the Bicentennial Commission, and was 2nd Vice Regent of the Capt. John Harris Chapter of the DAR. Combining her love of history and antiques, she “dabbled” in early crafts, such as candle dipping, spinning and chair caneing. She was also well known for her flower arrangements, wreaths, and music boxes. A co-owner of the Canal Site Auction Service, Nicki had written articles on early times and antiques for The Evening Sun. At different times during her life, she had worked in retail, most recently for the LARC H. H. Agency in their Personal Records department. Musically inclined, she had played accordion in her father’s dance band in her earlier years, and had donated her time as a girl scout counselor in the Sequenango Council of the Arts. Nicki had married twice, first to Leonard R. Jones and secondly to Frances G. Young.
Nicki is survived by her children: Cynthia “Cindy” Wood of Norwich, Eric Jones and wife Kimberly of North Norwich, and Jennifer Helmstadt and husband Thomas of Schoharie; by her grandchildren: Jessilee, Alysha, David, and Collin Ray Jones, Dustin Wood, and Olivia and Luke Helmstadt; by her step-sister, Lahoma Franklin, and step-brother, Haden Hendrickson. She is also survived by her uncle, Hobart Jackson of Norwich, who was very special to her; and by nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and great grand nephews. Nicki was predeceased by her sister, Edith Gale, and her step-sister, Wilma Schuck.
A memorial service for Nicki will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford, pastor of the Earlville Baptist Church, will officiate. There will be no calling hours.
Please consider memorial contributions to the Sidney Emergency Squad, Sidney, NY 13535.
