N. Marie Gridley


ONEONTA – Nellie Marie Gridley, 78, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 in the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.
She was born March 3, 1931, in Bainbridge, the daughter of Lawrence and Nellie Gridley. She grew up on a dairy farm in Yaleville. She was active in 4-H and a member of the Guilford Methodist Church. Marie graduated from Guilford Central School, and Hartwick College School of Nursing.
Marie was a nurse at M.I. Bassett Hospital; Bethel and Juneau, Alaska; Oneonta Nursing Home; and A.O. Fox Hospital. She worked mostly in the Pediatric and Maternity Departments. Marie retired in 1992.
Marie enjoyed sewing and knitting (she knitted many mittens and sweaters for the newborns); the outdoors especially fishing and snow shoeing in Alaska and hiking; photography; and traveling.  She included her nieces and nephews on many of her trips. 
Marie was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta where she was active in the Suzanna Circle; the New York State Nurses Association; and the Susquehanna Valley Quilters. 
Marie is survived by her brothers, Hobert (Beverly) Gridley and Norris (Donna) Gridley; sister, Jean (Robert) Schermerhorn; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.  She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Gordon Gridley.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorial services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Ned Eastman officiating.  Burial will be in the Yaleville Cemetery, Guilford.  Contributions in Marie’s memory may be made to either the Guilford Methodist Church, the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta or to the Hartwick College School of Nursing.
