Ellen Lloyd


NEW BERLIN – Ellen M. Lloyd, a lifelong New Berlin resident and pillar of the community, passed away Oct. 7, 2009 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, following a debilitating stroke.
She was born in her family home in New Berlin on Oct. 31, 1916, the daughter of Fred B. and Katherine Harrington Moak.
A 1934 graduate of New Berlin Central School (NBCS), Ellen received her Teaching Credentials in Primary Education from The Wheelock School, Boston, Mass. in 1937, On Aug. 10, 1937, she married Donald A. Lloyd in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin.
After raising her family, Ellen continued her education through night school and summer classes while working at the NBCS library. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Oneonta in 1967 and a Master of Library Science degree from Syracuse University in 1976.
She will be fondly remembered by many from NBCS where she served as an aide, assistant and Head Librarian for 41 years, retiring in 2000. After her retirement as Head Librarian, Ellen continued working as a volunteer at the now Unadilla Valley Central School selling tickets at home games and other school events. In addition, she was the New Berlin Historian, maintaining current scrapbooks on New Berlin and the surrounding area. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the New Berlin Library for 50 years while at NBCS and after retirement until her death. She was a member of the NYS United Teachers Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society of women in education.
Ellen Lloyd was a generous, active and respected lady with high values. Among her many community service contributions were: over 50 years as the secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star, President of the Silver Lake Swimming Club, Girl Scout leader. Cub Scout Den Mother, member of the New Berlin Historical Society, and member of the New Berlin Art Forum. As a fifth generation member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, established by her ancestors, she was very active in serving as head of me Altar Guild, in the Hand Bell Choir, and as the Kindergarten Sunday School teacher for many years. She also was an accomplished knitter. She taught knitting, assisted numerous local women with their knitting projects, and was proud of the many sweaters, mittens and afghans that she donated to various charitable causes. She was recognized in 1993 as both the NBCS Teacher of the Year and as New Berlin’s Citizen of the Year.
Ellen enjoyed reading and sports of all kinds, including swimming, diving, and both downhill and cross-country skiing. She was a charter member of the Hard Core Ski Club, rode the spectator bus to NBCS away games, and was a season ticket holder for Syracuse University football games. She also enjoyed driving her signature convertible.
As matriarch of the Lloyd family, Ellen is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth L. Clement, Naples, Fla. and two sons: Calvin A. Lloyd II (Ann), Tampa, Fla. and Donald A. Lloyd II (Sharon), Grayslake, Ill. She also has eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Donald, her sister, Marion L. Boerner, and her son-in-law, Butler K. Clement.
Calling hours are scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Dakin Funeral Home LP in New Berlin.
Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Berlin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 17, followed by interment in St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Berlin Library.
