Douglas Gary Smith, 66, of Oley, PA, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, November 7, 2016 in Reading, PA due to cardiac arrest.
Doug was born February 16, 1950 in Norwich, NY to his parents Herman L. Smith and Mildred M. Barnhart. He was the youngest of eight children.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Glady M. Smith Deady in 2004 and his brothers Robert L. Smith in 2008 and Richard E. Smith in 2015.
Doug is survived by his sons David M. Smith of Florida, Joseph Smith of Bechtelsville, PA and his daughters Abigail Smith and Emily Suzanne Smith of Bechtelsville, PA. He is also survived by his granddaughter Kelsa Lynn Smith of Elkton, VA and grandson Jack Smith of Bechtelsville, PA.
Also surviving are his sister Patricia M McMullen (John) of Monroe, NC and his brothers Donald P. Smith of Binghamton, Harold L. Smith of Sheldon, VT and Herman L. Smith of Monroe, NC. In addition he had many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends around the country.
Doug graduated from Norwich High School in 1968 and from SUNY Binghamton. He was most noted for his computer programming expertise and for teaching computer technique classes at businesses around the country. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and devotion to his children.
He retired in 2014 to have more time to spend with his daughter Emily whom he adored. They were inseparable. He joined her in many of her activities at church and other places. He championed her at the Special Olympics in which she participated.
