SHERBURNE: Mary E. (Betty Gebhardt) Smith, passed away at her home on November 4, 2016 after a short illness, with her family at her side.
She was born August 22, 1924 in Manhattan, daughter of Raymond and Dorothy Raggie. After her graduation she moved to Amityville, Long Island. She worked as one of the first “page girls” in the Central Hanover Bank & Trust, since all the young men had enlisted. Betty worked for T.A.C.O. in Sherburne, at the Sherburne school cafeteria, and had a small stationery store called “Gebby’s” for several years. In earlier days, she was active in the Altar Guild of the Episcopal Church and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved sailing and was passionate about her flower gardens.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Daniel Seymour of New Berlin, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Sue Gebhardt of Nesbit, MS; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a brother, John Raggie of Ronkonkoma, LI; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Sunday, November 13, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. A brief prayer service will follow at 4 p.m.
Interment will be private at the convenience of her family.
