Helen A. Dunckel


Helen A. Dunckel, 93, of Preston, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away Thursday morning, November 3, 2016 at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility.
Helen was born August 3, 1923 in Ft. Plain, NY the daughter of Albert J. and Bessie (Fisk) Dygert. She graduated from the Norwich High School in 1939 as class Salutatorian at the age of 15. After graduation she worked at Woolworths Dept. Store and then at NBT for 7 years. At NBT she was the secretary to Bank President Otis A. Thompson and Manager of the Mortgage Department, Assistant Vice President. She left NBT to assist her husband Louis with the operation of Dunckel Farms. They had 600,000 layers and 150 milking cows on their farm. In 1989 Louis, Helen and their son David started Egg Low, Inc. At this plant they processed eggs making cooked and packaged scrambled and diced eggs for institutional use.
Helen enjoyed sewing and embroidery and made many cherished things for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching game shows and also loved family gatherings and cooking for all. She was a great cook and baker.
On September 2, 1946, Helen married Louis D. Dunckel who passed away July 24, 1993.
Helen is survived by her daughters Barbara Tompkins and husband Gary of Preston, Betty Dunckel of Newberry, FL and her son David Dunckel and wife Diane, her grandchildren Nathan Tompkins and wife Rachel, Erin Degan and husband Jerry, Trevor Tompkins and wife Joanna, Andrew Camp and wife Kilian, Rebecca Nani and husband Matt, Jennifer Dunckel and Jonathan Dunckel and wife Jeannette. Helen is also survived by nine great grandchildren whose company she thoroughly enjoyed as well as nieces and nephews.
A special thanks goes to Alice Angle, Becky Hagenbuch and Jenny Simmons, her caretakers for the past few years.
A funeral service for Helen was held today, Monday, at 2:00 pm from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Very Rev. David Hanselman, District Dean of Chenango County officiated. Interment was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends called at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Monday from 12-2 pm.
