Veta Mary Franklin


Veta Mary Franklin, 100, most recently of Binghamton and a former resident of Norwich, passed away Monday evening, October 31, 2016, at the Fairview Good Shepard Nursing Home of Binghamton.
Veta was born on July 3, 1916 in Walton, NY the daughter of Robert A. and Rachel (Hall) Palmer. As a young child she moved with her family to Sidney center and attended the Sidney schools. Following her marriage to Clifton Barnes they moved to Walton where she worked in the silk mill. In 1943 they moved to Afton and subsequently to California for nine years while her husband worked on the Boulder Dam. Following the death of her husband, Veta came back to New York in 1952 making her home in Mt. Upton until 1958 when she moved to Norwich. While making her home in Norwich Veta worked for the Woolworth Dept. Store for over 19 years retiring in 1978. For the past 12 years she has made her home in the Binghamton area.
On March 11, 1961 she married Paul L. Franklin who passed away January 3, 2004.
Veta is survived by her son Clifton Robert Barnes and wife Mary of Ithaca, step-daughter Shirley DuBois of Oxford, daughter-in-law Dawn Barnes of Binghamton and her sister Olive Warren of FL. Also surviving are her grandchildren Chad Barnes and wife Catherine, Mark McKeever, Shannon McKeever and spouse Anthony, Jasmine McGillick and husband William, James E. Barnes and wife Julie Ann, John C. Barnes and wife Julie, Catherine Conzone and husband Brian and Craig Hurlburt along with many great and step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thanks to Fern, Janice and Ginger for the visits over the past few years.
Veta was predeceased by her husband’s Clifton Barnes and Paul Franklin, her son Charles (Chuck) Barnes, step-daughters Barbara and Priscilla, her sister Ethel Jacobsen and ½ sister Doris.
A funeral service for Veta will be held on Friday, November 4, at noon from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Valley View Cemetery of South Otselic.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 10-12.
