Irene Greene died peacefully at home on September 5th, 2016. She was born Nora Irene Button on August 8, 1924 in Pittsfield, New York, the daughter of the late Leon and Leeta Button.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Adelbert, Fenimore, and Mernice Button. She was also predeceased by her nephew, Richard Button.
Irene moved many times due to her husband’s career in the Navy. No matter where she lived, she established a home full of good books and delicious meals. Her lively intelligence and sharp wit made for memorable dinner table conversation.
A life long Episcopalian, Irene served on Vestries and the Alter Guild. She was an early and strong supporter of equal rights for all people. She especially supported Planned Parenthood and Amnesty International. She was an avid reader who took her children to the library weekly. She often read aloud to them.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Lynne Tuthill Greene. She is also survived by her children, Mott Greene(Jo Leffingwell), Susan Greene(Yuki Hartman), Peter Greene(Kathleen Orr), and Joyce Greene. She is survived by seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She leaves behind her niece, Janet Button and her good friend, Joanne Waller.
She will be greatly missed.
