Wanda Johnson


OXFORD – Wanda H. Johnson, 89, of Oxford, passed away on Sept. 29, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
She was born on July 10, 1920 in Preston the daughter of the late William and Grace (Hammond) Hoag. On Sept. 24, 1941 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford she married Louis Johnson, who passed away on July 16, 2004.
She is survived by her sons and daughter in law, William Johnson of Avon and James and Colleen Johnson of Delhi; her grandchildren, James Johnson Jr. and his fiancé Charlene Peacock of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jennifer C. Johnson of Springfield, Mass. Her faithful neighbors, Daphne Burdick and Valarie Hughes and many friends also survive.
Wanda graduated from Oxford Academy and Central School and attended Ridley Business School. She was a secretary for attorneys, Wayne Bullock, C. Vernon Stratton and Dewitt & Snaberg and also at the Norwich Pharmacal Co. during World War II. She was a 70-plus year member of the New York State Grange. She was a member and past matron of Lafayette Chapter #340, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Oxford Birthday Club. She and her husband were winter residents of Zephyrhills, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford with The Rev. Ralph Osborne, officiating. Members of Lafayette Chapter will conduct a service at the church prior to the funeral.
Friends may call at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Common Cents Thrift Shop, PO Box 17, Oxford, NY or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford.
