Ward H. Dewey


Our Ward Dewey, 90, of Sherburne, NY started farming in heaven on April 30, 2016. The last child of Wayne and Anna Dewey, Ward was born at his parent’s farmhouse on January 2, 1926 and joined his older siblings Margie Chase (deceased), Doris Wolf (deceased), Russell Dewey (deceased) and Edna Satterlee (deceased). He graduated from Sherburne High School in 1943, bought his parents farm in 1948, and married M. Jean Barnes of Sherburne in 1950. Over the years, Ward and Jean welcomed five children to Dewey Nob - Wanda, Tim, Allen, Connie and Chris. Ward loved farming, family and friends. He also had a special talent for gardening, music, woodworking, painting and keeping all of us warm with his wood stove. He loved good home cooked food and sharing the flowers and vegetables from his garden. His gentle nature was a gift to all of us.
Ward is survived by his children, Tim and Betti Dewey of Mesa Arizona, Colleen (Connie) and David Dewey-Wright of Owego, NY and Chris Dewey and Laurie McLellan of North Chili, NY. Ward has eight grandchildren: Brett Glazier, Amy Lindsay, Meghan Kelly, Michael Dewey, Kristi Mumford, Jordan Keller, Kendra Dewey-Wright, Lauren Dewey-Wright and two step grandchildren, Max Van Arsdale and Mya Haskins. He has eight great grandchildren: Mitchell and Max Glazier, Alexis and Ayden Lindsay, Charles and Robert Dewey, Amelia Mumford, Christopher Haskins and three on the way! Twenty two people had the honor and privilege of calling him Uncle Ward. Ward is now joyfully reunited with his wife of 64 years, Jean Dewey (2015), his daughter, Wanda Kelly (1999), his son, Allen Dewey (1999) and his grandson, Logan Keller (2010) along with many other family members, friends, cats, dogs and cows.
A memorial celebration service of Ward Dewey’s life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 2pm at the Sherburne United Church of Christ, South Main & East State Street, Sherburne, NY. Light refreshments will be served.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Ward’s name may be sent to the Sherburne Fire Department Pageant Fund - 15 West State Street, Sherburne, NY 13460 or the Life Focus Fund at Chase Memorial Nursing Home - 1 Terrace Heights, New Berlin, NY 13411. This fund supports resident celebrations/programs and care of the animals at Chase.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
