Max Rice


NORWICH – Max Albert Rice joined hands with the Lord September 11, 2009 while at the Gettysburg Center Nursing Home, Gettysburg, Pa.
Max was born in July 22, 1915 in Franklin, Bradford Co., Pa. to Harry Rice and Ruby Pearl Varney Rice. He snd his sweetheart Ruth Francis Allen married on 15 February 1933 in Elmira, Chemung County.
Max and Ruth worked at the Towanda, Pa. Silk Mill before moving in 1938 to Norwich, Chenango County. Max worked at the Norwich Knitting Mill and at the O & W RR and in 1949 purchased a 400 acre dairy farm in Preston. While farming, he also engineered for the D & H RR and he retired in 1962 settling in Kirkwood, Broome County. After Ruth’s death in 1994, Max moved to Abbottstown, Pa., where he resided nntil his passing.
Max has been survived by his son Robert, his daughter Margaret Stiles; grandchildren: David Rice, Carole Laman, Todd Stiles, Colleen Patterson; and great grandchildren: Aston and Logan Stiles, Parker and Addison Rice. He is also survived by a brother Ralph of Unadilla, Pa. He was preceded in death by brothers Glenn, Harold, Larry, and Fred and two sisters, Kathryn and Amy.
Max was a devoted Mason, bowler, hunter, golfer and baseball-softball player. Max’s life was notable by his dedication to work and family and he will be sorely missed by all.
Max’s remains will rest beside his loving wife, Ruth in West Franklin Cmty., Franklin Twp., Bradford Co., Pa.
