He graduated from Mt. Upton Central School and attended college at Dutchess Community College. In 1969, shortly after graduating, he was drafted into the US Air Force. He served his country at various stations. He especially enjoyed his time in Turkey, which inspired his love of the architecture. His signature architectural feature was archways; every design had to have one, including his own home.
Rich was a member of the Norwich American Legion. He greatly enjoyed hunting and was a member of the NRA. He loved music and had an impressive record collection. Rich delighted in entertaining and throwing parties, and was always an attentive host.
