Thomas Porter Denton


Thomas Porter Denton of Norwich passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016, at home due to complications from congestive heart failure and diabetes. He was born on October 12, 1940 in Charlottesville,VA the son of Hiram and Mary (Baldwin) Denton the oldest of three children. The family later operated a dairy farm in Davenport, NY before moving to Norwich after his fathers death. Tom graduated from the South Otselic Central School where he excelled in academics, basketball and the shot put, once setting a record. He graduated from St. Lawrence University with a BA in German, and Western Michigan University with a Masters in Library Science before working many years in the Buffalo and Erie County Library System. Tom was employed by the University of Texas in Austin as a librarian in numerous departments prior to his retirement in 2006. He moved back to Norwich in 2012 to be near his friends.
Tom was predeceased by his parents and his grandfather William Augustus (Gus) Baldwin who was a former Post Master in Norwich. He is also survived by his sons Matt Denton and wife Ellen, Mike Denton and wife Mate and Chris Denton. Also surviving are his 5 grandsons Casey, Bailey, Corey, Mason and Merrick, 2 sisters Deborah Hughes and Karen Denton.
Tom’s family wishes to thank Loma Wilkins and Judy and Rick Wright for their friendship and support to Tom.
We will miss his humor and intellect and of course the lonesome pole cat.
There will be no local services and interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home.
