George Ives


SARASOTA – George C. Ives, 87, of Sarasota died Sept. 8, 2009.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara Turner of Norwich and his daughters, Elizabeth (Robin) Hamme and her husband, D. Eugene Hamme, and Nancy Ives and her husband, Steven Steinkirchner, all of Hendersonville, N.C. ; and his granddaughters, Keeler and Blakely Gove, of Pittsburgh.
George attended the Taft School and graduated form Dartmouth College with an A.B., just in time to join the United State Naval Reserve. He was a deck officer on a LCI and commanding officer of a LST during the World War II Allied Invasion of Italy. At war’s end, George earned a law degree from Cornell University and was admitted to the New York State Bar. He then became a legal assistant to Paul Herzog, chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, before becoming an associate attorney with Simpson, Thatcher and Bartlett.
In 1953, he became legal counsel and administrative assistant to his father, U.S. Senator Irving Ives of Norwich. He was admitted to the Bar in the District of Columbia in 1959, and went into private practice in law and labor relations there. From 1969 through 1981, he was appointed to the National Mediation Board by three U.S. presidents for four terms as member, with five of those years as chairman.
After moving to Sarasota in 1981, George became active in the community for more than 30 years as a year-round citizen. In addition to being a labor and commercial arbitrator, he served as director and chairman of the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation Inc., director and president of the New College Library Association, director and president of the Ivy League Club, and president of the Plymouth Harbor Residents’ Association.
He graduated from Norwich High School in 1939.
