DOUGLAS L. GEORGIA
Douglas L. Georgia, 68, of Norwich, a loving family man and friend to all, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016, in the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
Doug was born in Oneonta on October 5, 1947 the son of Harold & Julia (Lynch) Georgia. He grew up in Unadilla where he attended the Unadilla School. Following his education Doug worked for the FBI for a brief period of time before being drafted. He served his country in the United States Army as a MP from 1967 until his honorable discharge in 1969. His employment began in the early 1970’s with the former C&U Telephone Co. in Bainbridge and Sidney. He continued with the company for over 40 years retiring from Frontier as a multi system specialist.
Doug also had a passion for horses. He was known throughout the area as an owner, trainer and racer having many races under his belt at Vernon Downs. He could often be seen with his horses at the Chenango County Fair Grounds track. An easy going, open and unassuming guy, Doug enjoyed life. He enjoyed discovering “new” things, traveling and at the age of 50 discovered the game of golf. He enjoyed a good conversation, many of which took place at Millie’s Diner with his buddies form work and the track.
On February 14, 1997 he married June Eltz who survives.
Besides his wife June of Norwich, Doug is survived by his mother Julia of Binghamton, his daughters Denise Cook and husband Michael of Endicott, Esta Amedeo and husband Tom of West Hartford, CT, his step-daughters Tera Dutkiewicz and husband Chris, Tracy Deluke and husband Andy. Also surviving are his 9 sisters, Joanne Embury and husband Joe of TN, Barbara Vill and husband Tom, Cheryl Hesco and Martha Orshal all of Binghamton, Connie Roberts and husband John of Pahrump, NV, Patty Schwenke and husband Gerhard of Boca Raton, FL, Elaine Casey and husband John of Guilford, Mary Sheldon and husband Bart of Otego, Dorothy Kilmer and husband Martin of Binghamton and his brother David Georgia of Binghamton. Doug is also survived by his grandchildren Jamie and Jackie Cook along with his step-grandchildren Aidan and Parker Dutkiewicz and Nicholas Deluke. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A service for Doug will be held on Wednesday, January 20, at 1:00 pm from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Nancy Hale, Pastor of the Broad St. United Methodist Church will officiate.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11-1pm.
