JOHN C. WHALEY
SHERBURNE – John C. Whaley, 92, of West State St. passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at his home.
He was born April 23, 1923 in North Norwich a son of Carey and Emily Whaley. John joined the U.S. Army in February 1943, proudly serving his country during WWII in the European Theater of Operations in the Rome-Arno battle. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in February 1946. On November 22, 1945, John married Evelyn F. Gibbs in North Norwich, a loving union of 69 years. She predeceased him on September 7, 2014. John was a resident of North Norwich where he owned and operated Whaley’s Value Way Store and was the Postmaster for over 30 years. He lived in Sherburne for the past eight years. John loved the outdoors and was a skilled and avid hunter, trapper and fisherman.
He was a member of the North Norwich United Methodist Church; the North Norwich Fire Department; and a former member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge in Norwich.
Surviving are his children, Wendy Whaley-Sauder and her husband, Jim of Goshen, VT; and Victoria Clark of Arizona; a sister and brother-in-law, Jessie and Bill Labor of North Norwich; nine grandchildren: Emily, Matthew, Jayme, Ryan, Lacey, Courtney, Brittany, Adam and Natalie; seven great-grandchildren: Aiden, Quinn, Jameson, Parker, Katie and Naivy; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John A. Whaley in 2002, and three brothers, Ken, Ed and Al Whaley.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at 2pm Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by interment in the North Norwich Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1-2pm prior to the service.
