Betty Haines


NORWICH – Betty Conklin Haines, 82, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sept. 14, 2009. 
She was born May 31, 1927 in Johnson City, to the late Willard and Grace Conklin.  Betty owned and operated Smart Set Salon in Norwich from 1961 to 1973.  In 1973, she moved to Virginia Beach.  Betty enjoyed gardening, crafting, and bowling.  She was a member of the Doll Dreamers Club and the Virginia Beach Eagles Auxiliary.  Betty loved and cherished her grandchildren, who truly were the light of her life.
She is preceded in death by her son, William Harry Thompson Jr., and step-daughter, Michelle Renee Haines.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 25 years, John Joseph Haines; children, Rosemary Thompson Karlson and husband Orrest Jr., Robin Marie Pepiot and husband Jack, and Austin L. “Dusty” Ruscoe and wife Lee Ann; step-children, John Joseph Haines Jr., and Patricia Marie Bivins and husband Steven Michael; sister, Shirley Sullivan; brother, William Conklin; grandchildren, William Alan Karlson, Tonya Nicole Del Carmen, James Ryan Pepiot, Alan Christopher Karlson, Katherine Marie Pepiot, Brittany Paige Ruscoe, Kayla Lynn Ruscoe, Andrew Martin Pepiot, and Bryan Austin Ruscoe; step-grandchildren, Robert Haines, Steven Michael Bivins, Joey Smith, Shawna Lee Thompson, Jackie Bivins, and Catherine Green; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family request in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association.
