Elizabeth “Bette” Crandall
KERRVILLE, TEXAS – Elizabeth "Bette" Crandall, 88, embraced eternity on November 11, 2015. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA to Edmund Davis and Ethel Fuller, she married Donald Monroe Crandall on October 25, 1947. Elizabeth Crandall graduated from Sidney High School and received her RN nursing degree at the Charles S. Wilson Hospital Nursing School in Johnson City, NY. Elizabeth worked in Norwich, NY as a dental surgery nurse under Dr. Frank Ulrichs and Dr. Arthur Windheim. She later worked in skilled nursing for the elderly at Valley View Nursing Home as a charge nurse. While there, Bette took it upon herself to train and educate new hires, compiling a manual on the 'art' of nursing. She also worked as a private nurse for the terminally ill. Upon leaving her job in nursing, the nurse's aides whom she had trained honored Elizabeth with a plaque stating, "To the best nurse who cared enough to show us the right way.”
In a change of career, Bette worked as a receptionist and director of advertising for The Evening Sun newspaper in Norwich, NY. She enjoyed 58 years of marriage to her husband Donald Monroe Crandall who passed away in 2005. Upon the couple's retirement, they moved to Palm Bay, FL where they made numerous friends. She recently stated, "We were always happy. We woke up happy and went to bed happy." Elizabeth is survived by her son, Dr. Donald E. Crandall and his wife, Jennifer.
As a lover of music, Elizabeth gave her son Donald his first piano lessons and inspired him to continue on until becoming his greatest fan. She was an avid devotee of the musical arts and enjoyed attending various live music performances throughout the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The family wishes to thank all who have extended their heartfelt support and small kindnesses to Elizabeth throughout her lifetime and during her last years in Kerrville, TX.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Schreiner University Music department in her honor.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate the life of Bette Crandall.
Condolences may be sent at www.grimesfuneralchapels.com by selecting the “Send Condolences” link.
Arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
