Arthur John Blakely


NORWICH – Arthur John Blakely, 92, a longtime Norwich resident, passed away Tuesday morning, November 10, 2015 at his home.
Art was born on April 15, 1923 in Westfield, PA the son of Arthur and Anna (Moore) Blakely. He attended grade school in Sabinsville, PA and graduated from the Elkland High School in 1941. It was at this point Art entered the United States Marine Corps serving his country for a total of 6 years with the first 2 years in Brazil. Following his service to our country, Art settled in Corning for a period of 2 years where he was employed in a radio store. In 1950 he moved to Norwich and went to work for GLA and it’s successors for 35 years. He retired on 1985 as Senior Electrical Project Engineer.
Art was always radio and electronically inclined and not wanting to sit and do nothing after his retirement he worked as a consultant for the company and taught the adult education program in electronics for the Norwich High School. He enjoyed teaching electronics, enjoyed his home craftsmanship, his fishing and traveling.
On July 8, 1945 in Westminster, MD he married Ruth (Naomi) Thompson who passed away December 24, 1994.
Art is survived by his children; Ruth Sayers of Glen Burnie, MD, Arthur Blakely and wife Diane of Columbia, MD, Virginia Blakely of Ogdensburg, NY, his grandchildren Stephen and Elizabeth Blakely and 3 great grandchildren Cedric, Ella and Reese Blakely. Also surviving is his sister Dolly Brant.
Besides his wife Naomi, Art is predeceased by his granddaughter Johanna, his sisters Ermyne and Bertha Paulo, half sister Particia Brown and a half brother Raymond Gerth.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-3:30 p.m. and 4:30 – 6 p.m. Services will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery of Sandy Mount, MD.
