Levern “rod” Simpson

SCHUYLER LAKE – Levern R. “Rod” Simpson, 60, of “Dog Patch” Schuyler Lake, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, peacefully at home.
Born in 1948 in Norwich, to Shirley and Laverne Simpson, Rod received his education in Norwich and then pursued his career with the United States Air Force, later following his passion for coins and collectibles, being known to most as “Rockin’ Rod.” Among his many community involvements over the years, his most recent were with the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT and a firefighter. He was a long-time member and supporter of the Exeter Historical Society, and a member and volunteer for the Adopt A Stone Program at the Schuyler Lake Cemetery, in which he played a large role in making the program come into being. He also had served on the Town of Exeter Election Board.
Rod is survived by his sisters, Sharon Shackleton of Norwich and Bonnie Norwood and husband Larry of South New Berlin, and his brother, Gary Simpson and wife Susette of Plymouth Reservoir; by his children, Anne Johnson and James Simpson; his grandchildren, Samantha, Basil and Mia; his expected great-grandchild, Elisa; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves behind special friends Jamie Johnson, Jim Johnson, and Leroy Seamans, who were always there in times of need.
The family would like to thank the V.A. Hospital of Syracuse for the wonderful care given to Rod, especially Alex Brown, who always made sure things were in order for him.
Graveside services with full military rites for Rod will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich. The Rev. John Young, Chaplain of the Schuyler Lake Fire Dept. and Pastor of the Light Walker Baptist Church of Morris, will officiate. There will be no calling hours. Rod’s family will hold a memorial service at Polly’s House in Schuyler Lake, details to be furnished at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Schuyler Lake Fire Dept., Schuyler Lake, NY, 13457; to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790; or to an organization of your choice.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.
