DONALD E. MONROE
NORWICH – Donald E. Monroe, 82, of Norwich and formerly of Smyrna, passed away Thursday morning, September 3, 2015, at the New York State Veterans Home of Oxford where he has been a resident for the past year.
Don was born in Smyrna on July 22, 1933 the son of Raymond and Pearl ( Folmsbee) Monroe and was educated in the Smyrna and Sherburne schools . He served his country during the Korean War from 1950-1953. Throughout his life Don has been in every state of the country either for work or travel working in the wheat fields of Kansas or the missle silos.. During his time in Norwich he worked in distribution for the Pennysaver and as a caretaker for Mrs. Manley on North Broad Street. For a period of time he also made his home in Otselic with his companion Eileen Slater who has since passed away.
Don is survived by his companion of 15 years Margaret (Peg) Armstrong of Norwich, his son Mark Carpenter of Alabama, his sister Pearl Cleveland of Sherburne and his brother Gordon Monroe and wife Ann of Midland, NC. Also surviving is a grandson , his sister-in-law Bonnie Monroe of Smyrna along with several nieces and nephews
Don was predeceased by a infant sister Ella Louise, a brother Albert Monroe and his brother-in-law Bill Cleveland.
A funeral service for Don will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Earlville will officiate. Interment with military rites will follow in the Willcox Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m.
