ROBERT JOHN DOWNEY 
NORWICH – Robert John Downey, Sr., of Norwich, passed away after a short illness on June 25, 2015 at his home, with his family lovingly by his side.
Bob was born on December 15, 1925, the son of Marion Bard and Thomas Downey. After attending Norwich Schools, he joined the Merchant Marines. Bob then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in the Pacific during World War II. He is a lifetime member of the VFW. On March 17, 1943, he married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Kay. Mary predeceased him on January 4, 1996.
Bob worked on farms as a young man and, upon his return from military service, worked at the Norwich Pharmacal Company and P&G for 35 years until his retirement. He took up golfing at the age of 62 and went on to have 5 holes-in-one throughout his career. He enjoyed woodworking and watching football. Through the years, he gifted many beautiful pieces of his woodworking to his children. Bob was a deeply committed man to Mary and the family his whole life.
Bob is survived by his children, Robert John Downey, Jr. (Loretta), of Norwich, Colleen Weidman (Dennis) of Oxford, Elaine Downey-Hackett of Plant City, Florida, and Michael (Karen) Downey, of Rensselaer, NY. Eleven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren also survive, as well as his sister, Autumn Law of Norwich, and two brothers, John Cole of Florida and Edward Downey of Nevada. He was predeceased by his sisters, Gloria McNitt, Beverly Slentz and Patricia Cowles as well as his brothers, Thomas, Gene and Donald Downey.
There will be no calling hours. A private service for the family will be held at their convenience. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
