GUY W. CAREY
EDMESTON – Guy W. Carey, 84, of Edmeston, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, June 25, 2015. He was born August 3, 1930, the son of Guy I. and Ethel (Brown) Carey. In December 1952 he married Nancy Page, who survives. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving in Europe from 1948 to 1952.
Guy was a well known insurance agent in the area and was retired from both Prudential Insurance and NYCM. While working for Prudential, Guy was District Agent of the Month for exemplary sales and service and was a member of the Academy of Honor for several years. He also served as acting Postmaster in Edmeston.
Locally, Guy was involved in many organizations and community projects. He was a former member and President of the Edmeston Rotary Club and was appointed Area Coordinator of Polio Plus in District 717. He served as Past Commander of the Wharton Valley American Legion Post 1311 and was a member of the VFW. He was the assistant coach of football at Edmeston Central School for several years, a Pony League baseball coach, college and high school umpire and Boy Scouts Cub Master. He was an avid fan of NY Mets baseball and Giants football. Guy was a member and Trustee of the Edmeston United Methodist Church. In addition, Guy was a member of the Edmeston Fire Department for 65+ years and was a founding member of the Edmeston Emergency Squad.
To Guy, golf was a way of life. He was a member of both the Leatherstocking and Red Pines golf clubs and played regularly in the NYS Seniors Golf Association tournaments.
In addition to his wife Nancy, Guy is survived by his children, Michael (Laurie) Carey and Lisa (Ron) Slaga, his grandchildren Derek & Brandon Schoonover and Heather, Rebecca and Stephanie Carey and great grand children, Spencer Cummings, Ashleah Ford, Anaiya Davis, Peyton Russell and Bradlee Schoonover. He is also survived by his sisters, Delores Miller-Blessing and Euretta Puylara and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and an infant son, Richard W. Carey
Funeral services for Guy will be held on Tuesday, June 30th at 1:00 p.m., at the Edmeston United Methodist Church with Pastor Becky Parry officiating. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., just prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.
Contributions in Guy’s memory may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, Edmeston Fire Department or the Edmeston United Methodist Church.
