Salvatore J. “sam” Sastri


HAMILTON – Salvatore J. “Sam” Sastri, 88, of Hamilton, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at the Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
He was born July 16, 1926 in Norwich, NY, one of nine children of Frank and Jenny Fazio Sastri and was a graduate of Norwich High School. Sam proudly served his country in the US. Navy during WWII from 1944 to 1946. On August 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Nancy Runyon at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Norwich. Nancy predeceased him on October 19, 2008. Sam was the owner, operator and chef of the Wallace Hotel in West Eaton until retiring. Following that, he moved to Vero Beach, FL where he loved working for the Vero Beach Dodgers. He also enjoyed playing golf.
Sam was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hamilton. He was a former member of the Hamilton Lions Club; a former Hamilton Village Board member; and a former member of the Fountain Fire Co. #1 of Hamilton.
Surviving are his children, Ann and Lyle Motley of Painted Post, NY; and John Sastri of New Haven, CT; a sister Rose Phelps of Norwich; a brother, Joseph Sastri of Hot Springs, AR; his grandchildren, Eustacia Bean and Jackson Sastri; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Monday, June 22, 2015 from St. Mary’s Church, 16 Wylie St., Hamilton, followed by interment with military honors in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton on Monday from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.
