GARY D. BURKE
NORWICH – Gary Burke, 68, of Norwich, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, surrounded by his family.
Gary was born March 28, 1947 in Norwich, to Robert and Irene (Long) Burke. He graduated from Norwich High School in 1965, and after a short stint in the Air Force, briefly worked for the DPW in Norwich. He was then employed as a mail clerk by the U.S. Postal Service in Watertown, NY for the next 20 years.
Gary met his wife, Jolynn (Vorhies) Burke, also of Norwich, in 1972, and they were married on July 6, 1974, and made their home in Watertown and later in Adams Center, NY.
In 1986, Gary was hired as a mail carrier by the Norwich office of the USPS, and they moved to Norwich, residing on Division Street since 1987. He retired from the Post Office in 2004, and at the time of his death, was employed as a custodian for the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.
Gary is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jolynn, their daughter, Jonna M. Burke, and granddaughter, Alyssa M. Burke, all of Norwich. He is also survived by his brother, Don Burke, of Sherburne, as well as an aunt and several cousins and many special friends.
Gary had a keen interest in local history, especially pertaining to Norwich. He served on many committees for local events and celebrations, including several class reunions. He was a member of, and also exhibited at the Norwich Historical Society Museum. He researched Norwich people and places, and interviewed many community elders over the years. He collected milk bottles from local dairies, and many artifacts from factories and businesses from previous eras.
Gary had a gift for acquainting himself with strangers and newcomers to the area. The next person he met was his newest friend. He was a fan of local sports teams, and all professional teams from Boston, particularly the Red Sox.
It was Gary’s wish not to have a funeral. His family is planning a celebration of his life, and will provide details once plans are confirmed.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Chenango County SPCA, or Little Mews Rescue in Oxford, NY.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
