PETER N. DeTOMI
Peter N. DeTomi, 83, formerly of Norwich, NY, and more recently of Green Valley, AZ, passed away early on Monday, March 2, 2015 in the Santa Rita Nursing Home in Green Valley with family by his side.
Born on February 28, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, Peter was the son of Achille and Pasqua (Fratantero) DeTomi. Following his high school graduation, Peter went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the College of Pharmacy at St. John’s University in 1953. He also served in the United States Army Medical Corp during the Korean War. Peter then attended New York University where he earned a master’s degree in Business Administration.
Peter married his sweetheart, Hedy Engel, on December 26, 1960, at the St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn.
He began his pharmaceutical career in Manhattan, and also enjoyed teaching as an Associate Professor at St. John’s University. In 1978, Peter and Hedy moved to Norwich after Peter became the assistant Director of Marketing at Norwich-Eaton Pharmaceuticals. He was later promoted to Director of Market Information until his retirement.
Peter was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Italian Club, the Newcomers Club, the Newman Club, and often participated during Masses at St. Paul’s Church, in Norwich, as a lector.
After retirement, Peter and Hedy relocated to Green Valley where he spent his days golfing on the course located in his back yard. He also enjoyed playing tennis, painting landscapes and still life and, of course, traveling to visit his children and grandchildren as often as possible.
Besides his loving wife of 54 years, Peter is survived by his daughter Peggy McGrath, and her husband, Robert, of Los Altos, CA, and sons Stephen, of Charleston, SC, and John, and his wife Maggie, of Norwich; five grandchildren, Michael, Colin and Jack of CA, and Katarina and Ryan, of Norwich. He is also survived by his sister, Linda, and nephew, John, of VA.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Green Valley Mortuary in Green Valley, AZ. A Mass will be celebrated for Peter on March 25, at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, in Green Valley.
