NEIL J. SLITER
ARKPORT – Neil J. Sliter, 77, passed away, surrounded by his family, Monday afternoon (Feb. 9, 2015) at his home on Oak Hill St.
Born on Jan. 26, 1938, in his grandmother’s home in the town of Butternuts in Ostego County, he was a son of Oliver and Grace Young Sliter. Neil married the love of his life, Janet Hendrickson Sliter on June 18, 1960 in Norwich, N.Y. They had two children, Kimberly Sue Prewitt (married to Paul Prewitt) and Chris Neil Sliter (married to Paula Calkins Sliter; and were later blessed with seven grandchildren, Jess, Evan and Alec Prewitt, Brittany, Amber, Logan and Parker Sliter. Neil is also survived by his brother, Ronald and his wife, Linda, their children, grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt. He was predeceased by his father, Oliver; mother, Grace; his sister, Carol; her husband, Bill Titus; also several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Neil attended several schools during his school years and graduated from Norwich High School in 1956. In 1958 he graduated from Broome Community College with a degree in Mechanical Technology. From 1958-1970 he worked in the engineering departments of several companies including, Link Aviation, the Bendix Corporation and SKF Industries. He later attained the knowledge and skills necessary to start his own business in residential construction and remodeling. Looking to the future, he worked hard and grew his business to include several rental properties. In recent years his creative passion led him to building custom cabinetry.
Neil was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather. He was also a dedicated member of the Arkport Presbyterian Church and served many terms as a trustee, a caring member of the Stephen’s Ministry and two terms as a session member. He also served as a trustee for the Arkport Village Board for over 20 years and was an active member of the Arkport Exchange Club. Neil also volunteered to coach the Arkport Little League baseball for several years. In his free time Neil always enjoyed spending time with his family, especially hunting with his son, Chris. He was also an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. He truly enjoyed nature and spending time at his summer home at Loucks Pond with his wife, Janet.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Neil J. Sliter.
There will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to meet his family at the Arkport Presbyterian Church where a funeral service will be held in his memory, celebrating his life, at 11 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 21, 2015) with the Rev. Beverly Karr-Lyons officiating. A luncheon and a time of sharing memories of Neil will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory for a new outdoor Nativity scene at the Arkport Presbyterian Church, 15 Main St., Arkport, N.Y. 14807. Envelopes will be available at the church.
