THOMAS J. NIXON
GREENE – Thomas J. Nixon, 93, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2015, at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford. He was predeceased by his wife, Janice, of 59 years and his parents Thomas and Anne. Also predeceased by his brothers Joe, Don, Jim, Jack; his sisters Helen, Kay and Agnes and his son in law, Steven Amell. Surviving brothers are Martin (Joan) and Richard (Kathi) and sister-in-laws Caryl and Pat. He is survived by two daughters and son. Kathy(George) Estey, Nancy Amell; Tim Nixon; Grandchildren, Carrie (Jay); Jason (Shannon); Jeffrey (Jessica) and nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Tom came to Greene at age 19 to run the Greene Theater.
Shortly after, he served his country during WWII in the United States Navy and Coast Guard. He then returned to Greene at the Theater and various jobs in Greene. He retired from the Prudential Insurance Company after 20 years. Tom and Janice were owners of Bowman's Jewelry and Gifts, a family owned business in Greene for over 50 years. He loved the Greene community and was involved in community projects, Fire Department, Labor Day Chair and he was a member of the American Legion for 71 years. He was a wonderful husband and father and loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren with all his heart. He blessed us with a tremendous sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes and spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed. We would like to thank all the staff at the NYS Veterans home in Oxford for their outstanding care of our father.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 12 noon at the Immaculate Conception Church 1180 State Highway 206 in Greene. Rev. Stanley Garlock will be officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Sylvan Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit before the Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church on Saturday, from 9 a.m.- noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greene Fire Department, 8 North Canal Street, Greene, N.Y. 13778 or the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, N.Y. 13830-4305. Arrangements are under the direction of The Kennedy Funeral Home, 21 North Chenango St., Greene, NY 13778.
