ALICE J. CARNRIKE
NORWICH – Alice Jane (McNeil) Carnrike, 85, of Norwich, passed away January 29, 2015, with her family by her side.
Alice was born July 16, 1929, in Norwich, NY the daughter of Daniel & Bridget (Carey) McNeil. She was a graduate of St. Paul’s School and Norwich High School Class of 1947. On September 4, 1948, Alice married George W. Carnrike, Sr. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church and they were blessed with 8 children.
Alice was a loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and godmother. She was a homemaker and returned to work in 1970 as a telephone operator at the C&U Telephone Company of Norwich, retiring in 1984. Alice was also a Democratic Election Inspector in Ward 6, City of Norwich for over 40 years. Alice was very proud of her Catholic faith and of her Irish heritage. She loved her family and friends, enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, video games, learned to play the piano in her 60’s and through the years loved her dogs Rex, Tags, Barney, Duke, Bubba and Jada.
Alice is survived by her husband of 66 years George, their seven children: Thomas (Sara) Carnrike, Syracuse, Michael (Ann) Carnrike, Norwich, Sharon (Robert) Burns, Binghamton, George Jr. (Tammy) Carnrike, Norwich, Bridget (William) Vaughan, Binghamton, Alice (Barry) Hart, Kirkwood and Christine Carnrike, Norwich; 22 grandchildren; Catherine & Thomas Carnrike, Carey (Jason) Bauer, Patricia (Pete) Kasmarcik, Kennedy (Jocelyn) Carnrike, James Carnrike, Daniel, Brian and Kathleen Burns, Michael and Andrew Strom, Terra (Gino)Granata, George III (Natalie) Carnrike, Allison & Daniel Vaughan, Maggie (Steve) Kestler, William Jr., Mary & Robert Vaughn, Elizabeth (Brian) Decker, Matthew (Melissa ) Hart and 9 great grandchildren. Alice is also survived by her son-in-law Eric Strom, her brother-in-law Bernard Merritt along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alice was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Mary (Maurice) Waldorf and Elizabeth Merritt, her daughter Mary (Carnrike) Strom in 2011 and her in-laws including Richard and Patricia (Collier) Carnrike.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice will be offered on Tuesday, February 3, at 11:00 am from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Ralph A. Bove, Pastor will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Monday, February 2, from 4-7 pm.
