MILDRED M. VERBICA
NORWICH – Mildred M. Verbica, 98, a resident of Norwich since 1981, passed away Monday evening, January 19, 2015, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital. Millie was born in Brooklyn on February 18, 1916 the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Beck) Schmitt. She grew up in Brooklyn where she attended the local school. Deciding to further her education, she attended Columbia Nursing School where she earned her nursing degree. Millie served her country in the United States Army where she earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Following her service to her country she remained in the New York City area where she worked as a key punch operator for Railway Express. She also had worked as a nurse at the VA Hospital in Northport. On September 18, 1949 she married Joseph Verbica who passed away December 13, 1993.
Millie and her husband Joe moved to the Norwich area in 1981 where they became well known for their work with Thouroughbred horses. Following his death she continued her passion for the ponies and could often be found placing her bets. In addition to the horses she enjoyed a good game of poker or playing the pull tabs. She was a member of the American Legion Post 189 of Norwich and also a member of the VFW Post 2782 Auxillary.
Millie is survived by her daughter Nancy Stocky and friend Boyd Niemi of Norwich and grandson Charles Stocky of VA along with several nieces and nephews.
Millie was predeceased by her brothers Henry and Howard Schmitt.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 5-7 p.m. Graveside services will be held in the spring from the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
